Menopause and hair loss
The menopause is a natural biological process which all women experience at some point in their lives. During this period the body undergoes various changes as it adjusts to fluctuating hormone levels. Many women experience unpleasant symptoms during menopause, such as hot flashes, mood swings and insomnia. Hair loss is another common symptom.
What causes hair loss during menopause?
Research shows that hair loss during menopause is the result of a hormonal imbalance. More specifically, it has to do with a reduced production of oestrogen and progesterone. These hormones make hair grow faster and stay longer on the head. When oestrogen and progesterone levels drop, hair grows more slowly and becomes much thinner. A decrease in these hormones also leads to an increase in the production of androgens, which are a group of male hormones. Androgens cause the hair follicles to shrink, resulting in hair loss on the head. In some cases, however, these hormones can cause more hair to grow on the face. Another annoying side effect.
In addition, more hair loss occurs in a male pattern, as the level of oestrogen drops a lot more than testosterone. In other words, in terms of hormonal balance, postmenopausal women become slightly more masculine and women with a predisposition to male pattern baldness notice this in their hair.
What to do about hair loss during menopause?
In older menopausal women, the cause of hair loss or thinning hair is almost always hormonal changes. However, other factors can also contribute to hair loss during menopause. Long-term stress, illness or a shortage of certain nutrients are examples. The fact that menopause can be perceived as a stressful period makes hair loss more painful and may even make it worse.
It is important to keep stress under control to avoid a hormonal imbalance. Reduced oestrogen production can affect the brain and cause mood swings, anxiety and depression. So, the stress experienced may be triggered by the hormonal changes due to menopause and not necessarily because menopause is so stressful. Relaxing breathing methods and yoga are effective in combating symptoms. Regular exercise can also help reduce stress.
Eating a balanced, low-fat diet is a good defence against hair loss. Make sure you eat plenty of whole grains, fruits and vegetables at many meals. It is also important to include monounsaturated oils, such as olive oil and sesame oil, in your diet. Drinking green tea and taking vitamin B6 and folic acid supplements can also help restore hair growth. Essential fatty acids also play a crucial role in maintaining healthy hair. These fatty acids can be found in the following foods: salmon, tuna, flaxseed oil, walnuts, almonds.
Hair growth products during the menopause
If you want to do something extra about hair loss during the menopause, your options are limited. Many hair growth products have an effect on the hormonal balance. This is precisely the reason for this type of hair loss. You do not want to exert any more influence on this. We therefore advise against using products such as minoxidil or nanoxidil. What we do recommend is using a nourishing keratin shampoo, supplementing your diet with MSM powder or using a lotion specially developed for women.
Keratin shampoo from Beaver
